Friendships

July 28, 2018

For more than a decade, the local Harley Davidson dealership has been the site of a summertime street party for the Children`s Hospital. The BRC founder`s band has entertained regularly at this annual outdoor festival,  and we have enjoyed making friends with many parents, patients, siblings, and health care workers.IMG_3615

About six years ago, we first became acquainted with a special youngster, and she has become our favorite fan.

Over the years, we have fondly watched her grow and listen to our Bluegrass music.

This year`s gig was on a sweltering day, but the band was blessed with a shady cover. We briefly stepped inside the dealership`s air-conditioned shop for a group photo which features a young and capable next -generation banjo picker.IMG_0509

Although this year is the last scheduled summer street fest, we will carry with us memories of valued friendships with the many good folks who share a link with the Children`s Hospital. We extend a very special thanks to Jeanne who tirelessly coordinated all of these successful fund raising events.

On the Antebellum Steps

September 20, 2017

Nestled on the shoreline of the Missouri River, the township of Boonville has a rich history. Its centerpiece is the Thespian Hall theater built 1855-1857.IMG_1153 (1)

When the Civil War erupted, the building served as a hospital and later a barracks for Federal Troops. Although the Hall had transfer of ownership on several occasions in the many  years that followed and saw some hard times, the community ultimately organized to preserve it. It now resides in the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a venue for music festivals and theater productions.

The BRC founder`s band performs at Boonville`s annual Festival of Lights street fair each autumn, and this year our benefit  gig was staged on the steps of this historic building which is the oldest active theater west of the Alleghenies. At tune-up time, the temperature was 90 degrees, but a cool breeze and shade from the church steeple across the street soon made the bandstand a welcoming platform. The townsfolk were appreciative of the Bluegrass music and generous in their donations to the Children`s Hospital.  School girls danced on the nearby street corner, and young lads with skateboards across the street gave the band members a thumbs-up.  It was a fun evening for the festival goers and musicians.Screenshot_2017-09-14-19-35-23 (4)

Harleys Rule & $20K

July 29, 2017

For about a dozen years, the BRC founder’s band has performed every July at an annual street festival to benefit the Children`s Hospital. The local Harley Davidson dealership generously donates its expansive parking lot for these yearly festivities. Leather clad motorcyclists congregate on their great machines and listen to the Bluegrass pickers while kids and families frolick on the grounds. Sometimes, the thunderous engines of the two- wheelers momentarily extinguish the music.FullSizeRender (18)

About 300 kids attended the fest this year to enjoy the games, local sports celebrities, and entertainment. We were glad to be visited by one of our all-time favorite banjo fans as pictured below.IMG_4697

Sunny skies and mild temperatures made it a pleasant day for staff and families. Two of the BRC founder`s helpers from the University Hospital orthopedic department joined him for a photo during the gig.

In the far left upper corner of the photo (wearing a black baseball cap) is a glimpse of Jeanne, the inexhaustible chairperson of the street fest and equally successful springtime Roast-a-Doc benefit gala.

This month, donations from Gainor & Friends to the Children`a Hospital surpassed the $20K mark since the band`s collections began in 1995. Congratulations to all you good folks.

Din Before Dinner

April 10, 2017

Last weekend, the BRC founder`s band again entertained the patrons who thronged to the annual Roast-a-Doc fundraiser for the Children`s Hospital. The atmosphere was so festive among the hundreds of boisterous patrons, that the band members could barely hear their instruments or harmony singing voices.  One musician loudly queried the band,, “Wasn`t this gala supposed to a be a silent auction?”Another band member responded, “How can we stay together in this din? ” A bemused picker quipped, “Philosophically speaking, you Kant get there from here.” Entertaining the children was, as always, a joy for us.

After the gig, the band went to a nearby Mexican restaurant for our yearly family dinner together.IMG_0894

Thanks to all these musicians for their generous donation of time and musical talent to the Children`s Hospital.
